So What is Jeuveau?

Jeuveau™ is the newest FDA approved neurotoxin to hit the U.S. market, and first aesthetic-only neurotoxin approved in the U.S. Jeuveau is similar to the other neurotoxins in the United States such as Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin, which in addition have FDA approved indications for medical use.

Is Jeuveau Safe and Effective?

A large global clinical Study known as TRANSPARENCY, was performed in the process of FDA approval of Jeuveau. The study included two Phase III U.S. trials, and a European & Canadian Phase III head-to-head double blind, placebo controlled trial versus Botox®, in which all the primary and secondary endpoints were met in 2100 patients and two long-term safety studies revealed no serious drug related adverse events. In other words, Jeuveau performed similarly to Botox in effect, longevity, patient satisfaction and safety.

Is one wrinkle relaxer "better" than the other?

In a word, no. I have successfully used all neurotoxins in the market for over 15 years, and find them all quite effective with only slight differences in “personality”. However, based on the molecular weight and chemical composition, Jeuveau is most similar to Botox and therefore switching between Botox and Jeuveau can easily be done.

So are Jeuveau and Botox Identical?

Although clinical trials have shown nearly identical results in treatment of frown lines, Jeuveau is slightly different.

  1. Jeuveau uses a technology called Hi-Pure. This means that when they manufacture the product, they use additional steps to purify the protein and that theoretically makes it safer. Clinically, this might only matter in patients who show resistance to Botox.

  2. Evolus, the company that makes Jeuveau is an aesthetic company. This means that Jeuveau is for cosmetic purposes only, such as wrinkles. Botox, on the other hand, is used for other things such as migraine headaches, sweating in the underarms, and a variety of other things.

Why Should I Try Jeuveau?

If there's one thing about Jeuveau that may be "better" than the mainstays it is competing with, is the affordability. While cost is important, we do not want to sacrifice quality. Even though Jeuveau is non-inferior to Botox (as shown in clinical studies) it is still the 4th neurotoxin in the US market, meaning they will face stiff competition from major established brand names such as Botox and Dysport. This might push the manufacturer, Evolus, into better pricing and promotional bonuses.

In addition, considering that Jeuveau is purely cosmetic, without any medical indications such as those of Botox, skirting medical-industry vetting saves the company and providers’ money, and patients by extension. The company is also offering customer incentives, including a $75 consumer coupon (called "#NEWTOXNOW") launching July 1 and a full loyalty program is on the way. Pricing wise, it could be an exciting opportunity for consumers!

Are There other Neurotoxins on the Horizon?

The Market for aesthetic procedures, especially the very popular neurotoxins is rapidly expanding. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, neurotoxin injectable procedures have increased almost 30 percent (28 to be exact) since 2010 among 20- to 29-year-olds. These numbers will certainly increase even more, and new toxins will be introduced for use. Of special interest to me, is a long-lasting neurotoxin from Revance Therapeutics. It has been in the FDA trials for quite a while, pending approval for 6 months longevity as opposed to 3-4 months for the other neurotoxins. Stay tuned!
