“Hormones” are trending—and that’s great. But the internet has turned a nuanced medical topic into a marketing battlefield. If you’ve heard bioidentical is always better or synthetic is always dangerous, it’s time to bring this back to reality.
First: what “bioidentical” actually means
Bioidentical is a chemistry term. It means the hormone molecule is identical to what the human body naturally makes (like estradiol or micronized progesterone).
That doesn’t automatically mean:
“risk-free”
“right for everyone”
“the only option”
It simply means the molecule matches the body’s native hormone.
What “synthetic” usually means in real life
“Synthetic” gets used loosely online. Clinically, it often includes:
estrogen formulations that are not identical to endogenous estradiol
progestins (progesterone-like compounds that can behave differently at receptors)
This matters because hormone effects are receptor-based. Different molecules can feel different in the brain, breast tissue, and other hormone-sensitive areas.
The biggest confusion: progesterone vs progestins
Many people assume “progesterone is progesterone.” It’s not.
Bioidentical progesterone is the hormone your body makes. Progestins are engineered to mimic certain progesterone actions but can be experienced differently by some women—especially around mood, sleep, and fluid retention.
Route matters as much as the molecule
Two people can take “the same hormone” and have very different experiences because the delivery method changes what the body does with it.
Oral hormones undergo first-pass metabolism in the liver. Transdermal delivery (patch/gel) bypasses that first pass and can change the risk/benefit discussion depending on your history.
That’s why we don’t do cookie-cutter protocols or “my friend loves this” decision-making.
Our V Boutique approach (whole-person anti-aging)
We don’t see anti-aging as one lever. We look at the full picture:
sleep quality + stress physiology
nutrition + movement
skin, scalp, and metabolic health
thoughtful medical strategy when appropriate (and monitored)
The goal is to support your biology—not overpower it.
